Prof. Emeritus Stephen Adei, Chairman of the Council at the Accra College of Medicine, has urged the government to develop a national policy that strengthens the role of private tertiary institutions in Ghana’s development.
In his remarks at the 6th congregation and 10th anniversary celebration of the Accra College of Medicine, Adei said that, out of 4,000 applications the University of Ghana Medical School received this year, it could admit only 150.
According to him, this means that the government can no longer independently train future doctors through public tertiary institutions; hence, they must collaborate with private medical schools.
He elaborated, “Ghana has reached a stage where we have over 90 accredited private institutions. There is therefore the need for a dedicated policy and agenda by the state to enhance the contribution of private universities and colleges.”
