Professor Donates ₦1.5m Prize for Agriculture Students

Professor Sidiqat Aderinoye-Abdulwahab of the University of Ilorin.

Professor Sidiqat Aderinoye-Abdulwahab of the University of Ilorin has endowed a ₦1.5 million prize to reward the school’s best graduating students in agriculture.

The announcement was made during her 289th inaugural lecture, where she explained that ₦750,000 would go to the best male student in honour of her late husband. At the same time, another ₦750,000 would be given to the best female student in memory of Hajiya Fauziyah Ali, who encouraged her academic pursuit.

The professor said the gesture was her way of giving back to society and inspiring future generations of agriculture students, especially women. Aderinoye-Abdulwahab also urged the proposed Ministry of Livestock Development to focus on educating pastoralists and setting up conflict resolution units to tackle clashes between farmers and herders.

She called for more substantial grazing reserves and modern ranching practices, and she equally warned that migration and land pressure continue to fuel conflicts. According to the Professor, solving Nigeria’s pastoral challenges will require policies that balance livelihood, environment, and security needs.
