The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) partnered with Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, to train 30 top scholars in Gas Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS), a leading analytical tool in oil and gas research.
The three-day workshop, out of 260 applicants, aimed to equip researchers with skills to modernise petroleum operations, reduce environmental risks, and advance Nigeria’s energy technology capacity.
Representing PTDF, Dr Neeka Jacob said the initiative is part of broader efforts to transform research into commercially viable innovations, stressing that emerging technologies in sustainable oil operations, renewable energy, and efficiency are national priorities.
PTDF’s Nuruhuda Darma highlighted the importance of linking universities, industry, and government to ensure research outputs are applied in real-world settings.
Prof Aminu Bayawa, PTDF Professorial Chair in Petroleum Chemistry, noted that mastering GC–MS enables precise identification and quantification of hydrocarbons, improving safety and productivity in petroleum research.
UDUS officials praised the initiative for reshaping the university’s research culture and strengthening its position as a hub for high-impact petroleum studies in Africa.
The workshop brought together scholars from 22 institutions, aligning with PTDF’s mandate to fund research, scholarships and institutional development, boosting Nigeria’s local capacity in the oil and gas sector.
