The College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), will begin postgraduate programmes next month, offering PhD and MSc degrees to support Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Over 2,000 applicants have been screened for the first PhD intake.
Established by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), CPESK is licensed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission to award postgraduate degrees. The college was created to build local capacity and reduce the cost of sending oil workers abroad for training, a practice that has sponsored more than 15,000 Nigerians to date.
Executive Secretary of PTDF, Ahmed Galadima Aminu, stated that the college offers 19 programmes across six departments and three faculties, with international partnerships facilitating a split-site model. Students will study primarily in Kaduna, with short academic stays at partner universities in the United Kingdom, including the University of Strathclyde, Robert Gordon University, and the University of Portsmouth.
Visiting the campus, Comrade Festus Osifo, President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), praised CPESK as a model of local content development. He highlighted its potential to train more Nigerians at home while maintaining international standards, describing the facility as comparable to global institutions like MIT.
