Reps Launch Probe Into NECO’s Budget, IGR from 2023 to 2025

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the National Examination Council’s (NECO) budget implementation, internally generated revenues (IGR), and virement activities from 2023 to 2025.

The decision followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Hon. Amobi Ogah during Thursday’s plenary.

Ogah, in his lead debate, said the probe was necessary for legislative oversight in line with Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He stressed that as a revenue-generating agency, NECO must be accountable for its financial operations.

He alleged that the examination body might have implemented variations without legislative approval, describing such action as a constitutional breach if proven true. The House subsequently mandated its Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies to examine NECO’s budget and IGR performance, including its bank statements and remittances to the Federation Account from 2023 to date, and report back within three weeks.
