Reps Oppose Removal of Key WAEC Subjects

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to reconsider removing Civic Education, Computer Studies, and Electrical Installation from the WAEC portal, stressing the importance of these subjects to students’ academic and national development.

The resolution followed a motion by Oboku Oforji, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency, who warned that the sudden removal disrupts students preparing for the 2026 WASSCE.

He argued that Computer Studies is essential for digital literacy, while Civic Education fosters civic responsibility. “Students in SS3 have been studying these subjects since SS1. Removing them now is counterproductive,” Oforji said.

The House noted that eliminating these subjects reduces the mandatory eight-subject requirement, leaving students with only five, and could jeopardise their readiness for national examinations.

Members called on the Ministry of Education to rescind the directive immediately and allow students to sit the examinations in subjects they have studied.

The motion was approved by voice vote, and an ad hoc committee will be established to monitor compliance. The call comes after the government’s September 2025 curriculum overhaul merged older subjects into Citizenship and Heritage Studies, a move that has created confusion among students and educators.
