Rivers State University (RSU) has confirmed the arrest of two students involved in separate theft cases in its hostels.
According to a statement by the Registrar, Mrs. I.B.S. Harry, a female student was caught stealing money and clothes in Hostel C. In contrast, a male student was found with a stolen laptop in Hostel F. Both students have been evicted and handed over to their parents. They will also face the university’s disciplinary committee.
The arrests come amid rising theft cases on campus, especially in female hostels. Just days earlier, thieves broke into Hostel H at dawn, stealing phones and valuables. Many students of the university have often blamed poor security and accused campus guards of prioritising dress codes over safety.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi has visited Hostel C and ordered a new security post, more guards, and tighter visitor checks. The university promised to improve safety and protect its students.
