Credible reports indicate that over 10 million Nigerian school-aged children are currently not attending school; however, recent efforts offer some hope that the situation may improve soon. A project called SchoolBox, created by The Offshore Lab, is transforming lives by bringing classrooms to children in remote and underserved areas.
Each SchoolBox is made from an old shipping container and turned into a solar-powered classroom, ICT lab, or hygiene centre. These mobile units can be set up in just 14 to 21 days and are linked to government schools, following the national curriculum. The first SchoolBoxes were launched in an IDP camp in Benue State in May 2025, with additional units to follow in the northern and southern parts of Nigeria.
Other groups are also helping. Radio programmes in Kano and offline learning apps in Lagos and Abuja are assisting children to continue their learning despite insecurity or poor internet connectivity. These solutions demonstrate that when communities, private groups, and the government collaborate, Nigeria can provide every child with the opportunity to learn again.
