The Chief Medical Director of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Prof Yusuf Dasilva, has warned that men can also develop breast cancer and urged both genders to undergo regular screening.
Speaking during a ‘Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness’ in Ilorin, organised by UITH and the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Dasilva emphasised that early detection is critical for effective treatment.
He explained that factors such as age, obesity, alcohol use, family history, radiation exposure, reproductive history, tobacco use and postmenopausal hormone therapy increase the risk of breast cancer. “The theme, ‘No One Should Face Breast Cancer Alone,’ highlights the need to raise awareness, fight stigmatisation, and promote early diagnosis,” he said.
Consultant General Surgeon Dr Olushola Fasiku noted that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women, with over two million cases recorded globally each year. He stressed that treatment is available and men should also participate in screening.
Consultant Public Health Physician Dr Mojirola Fasiku added that one in every eight women will develop breast cancer, calling on all stakeholders to support patients and avoid stigmatisation.
The awareness walk aimed to educate the public on risk factors, early detection and the importance of timely medical intervention to save lives.
