Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Senator Neda Imasuen, has said Nigeria requires graduates who can solve real problems rather than just accumulate degrees.
He remarked at the golden jubilee celebration of the Faculty of Arts, University of Benin, where he was honoured with a Distinguished Legislative Leadership award.
Imasuen reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to improving university funding and protecting academic freedom, stressing that chronic underfunding and frequent strikes have weakened higher education for decades. The senator said that many graduates in Nigeria leave school without the skills needed to tackle some of the country’s pressing challenges.
The senator urged institutions to raise a new generation of thinkers and problem solvers who can drive national development, rather than graduates limited to paper qualifications without impact.
