The wife of the Sokoto State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Aliyu, has launched the disbursement of cash support to 41,821 female students under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project.
The initiative, unveiled on Thursday, is part of a Conditional Cash Transfer programme aimed at tackling economic barriers to girl-child education in the state.
Aliyu said the project was helping to reduce the number of out-of-school children by boosting enrolment and retention in secondary schools. “By educating girls, AGILE is helping to build a more just and prosperous society,” she added.
She urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the support to remain focused on their studies.
The National Coordinator of AGILE, Fatima Buba-Haruna, described the transfer scheme as a key strategy to keep adolescent girls in public secondary schools. She said the initiative aligned with the federal government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” on expanding access to quality education.
Programme Coordinator, Dr Mansur Isa-Buhari, said the project had also renovated 749 classrooms, supplied over 11,000 desks, and installed 214 solar-powered boreholes across schools. The AGILE project is supported by the World Bank and currently runs in several Nigerian states.
