The United Nations (UN) in Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to partner with the Malala Fund in advancing the right to education and addressing barriers that keep millions of children, particularly girls, out of school.
The reaffirmation was made during a strategic engagement in Abuja with Nobel Laureate and co-founder of the Malala Fund, Malala Yousafzai, her executive team, board members, and the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall.
Fall, who led a delegation comprising representatives from UNICEF, UNESCO, UNDP, UNFPA, and UN Women, stressed the UN’s dedication to promoting inclusive and equitable education.
He identified insecurity, economic hardship, climate change, and entrenched socio-cultural norms as significant barriers, calling for greater efforts to promote gender equality and strengthen social cohesion.
Yousafzai, who arrived in Abuja for the Malala Fund’s Board of Directors annual meeting, stated Nigeria’s central role in the Fund’s global strategy for 2025–2030.
She disclosed that since 2014, the Fund has invested over $8 million in Nigerian partner organisations working to expand access to education for girls.
She outlined the Fund’s priorities in Nigeria, including ensuring married and pregnant girls return to school, increasing education financing, and using education as a tool to end child marriage.
