Southwestern University, Nigeria, has received approval from the National Universities Commission to begin offering a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree, marking a significant expansion of the institution’s academic portfolio. The university described the accreditation as a milestone that strengthens its mission to deliver world-class, innovation-driven education.
The founder and chancellor, Dr Babatunde Odufuwa, welcomed the approval as the fulfilment of a long-held ambition to establish a faculty that trains lawyers of competence, character and compassion. He said the development underscores the institution’s commitment to nurturing leaders who uphold justice and the rule of law.
Vice-Chancellor Professor M. A. Amusa said the new programme reflects the university’s investment in modern infrastructure and academic excellence, noting that its facilities include a digital law library, functional moot court and experienced legal scholars. He described the faculty as a model for contemporary legal education in Nigeria.
According to the university, the curriculum blends legal theory with practical experience through internships, legal clinics and partnerships with leading law firms and judicial bodies. Core areas will include constitutional law, corporate law, human rights and cyber law.
The institution said the approval further consolidates its growing reputation in higher education, positioning Southwestern University as one of Nigeria’s most forward-looking private universities.
