Unilorin Honours Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal with Award of Excellence
The University of Ilorin has presented an award of excellence to the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, in recognition of what it described as his principled leadership and contribution to national development. The honour formed part of the institution’s 50th anniversary celebrations held recently in Ilorin.
In a citation released by the university and circulated through the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government’s media office, Governor Lawal was praised as “a model of integrity and service whose reforms in governance, education and economic recovery reflect the values the university seeks to impart.”
Receiving the award on the governor’s behalf, the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, said the recognition would strengthen Lawal’s resolve to pursue inclusive development across Zamfara. He also congratulated the university on its golden jubilee and lauded its long-standing academic impact.
The anniversary lecture was delivered by renowned scholar and mediator, Professor Patrick Lumumba, who called for greater funding and respect for African universities. He warned that the continent’s development ambitions would remain out of reach unless its scholars and institutions were adequately supported.
Lumumba cited past continental commitments—from the Lagos Plan of Action to the Abuja health declaration—as examples of promises yet to be fulfilled, urging Unilorin to pursue policies that advance its community and the more expansive African academic space.
