The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has warned that it may soon embark on a nationwide strike if the federal government fails to resolve the lingering 2009 agreement with the union.
SSANU’s national president, Dr. Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, issued the warning during a leadership workshop at Tai Solarin University of Education in Ogun State. He accused the government of being insincere, saying that after 16 years, officials are now denying the existence of the agreement.
He warned that if the strike begins, it would be “total, indefinite, and absolute,” adding that the impact would be severe since both SSANU and NASU workers are critical to the running of universities.
Dr. Ibrahim also lamented the poor welfare of non-teaching staff, describing them as the “worst hit financially, economically, and psychologically” in the education sector.
The threat raises fresh fears of another significant disruption in Nigeria’s public universities if urgent action is not taken.
