Tensions escalated at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) on Monday as students, staff, and youth groups held a large-scale protest on campus, demanding the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, and the Chairman of the Governing Council, Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba.
The demonstration, led by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ekiti State Chapter, followed the group’s declaration of a “State of Emergency” over what it described as widespread corruption, moral decay, and administrative impunity in FUOYE.
Protesters carried placards accusing the Vice-Chancellor and Council Chairman of financial misconduct, manipulation of the ongoing Vice-Chancellorship selection process, and shielding staff implicated in sexual abuse cases.
NYCN Chairman, Amb. James Bankole, alleged that the Council was “weaponised for self-enrichment,” citing claims of inflated property acquisitions, relocation of meetings to Abuja at a high cost, and the approval of a ₦128m “research leave” for the Vice-Chancellor.
He also condemned alleged cover-ups of sexual misconduct cases, insisting that the environment had become unsafe for students.
The NYCN announced the relocation of its operational headquarters to FUOYE and vowed to sustain daily protests until its demands, including the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor, removal of the Council Chairman, a forensic audit, and protection for whistleblowers, are met.
