Recently, news emanating from many Nigerian schools indicates that students no longer rely on paper notes to cheat in examinations. Perpetrators of examination malpractice have gone digital, using smart devices such as AI apps, UV pens, smartwatches, and Bluetooth earpieces to evade scrutiny from examination invigilators.
A graduate from UNN said he used his Apple Watch to store notes and even used an AI app called Genie to get answers by simply writing the questions on the screen. Others confirmed using similar tricks during examinations. One student used a small Nokia phone to send himself key points through SMS. In a secondary school in Lagos, another student used a UV pen to write answers on his desk—these answers could only be seen with ultraviolet light.
At Benue State University, a female student concealed a Bluetooth earbud in her hair and utilised Google Assistant to obtain answers during her examination. These new cheating tricks are becoming increasingly common and are very difficult for teachers to detect.
