President Bola Tinubu has praised Nigeria’s early free primary education schemes, describing them as a powerful tool that lifted many families out of poverty.
Speaking at the 70th anniversary of the launch of Free Universal Primary Education in Lagos, Tinubu said the policies introduced in 1955, 1957, and 1960 by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Sir Ahmadu Bello gave millions of children a chance at a better life.
Represented by the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Aisha Garba, the president stated that the initiative laid the foundation for Nigeria’s human development and national progress.
He commended UBEC’s efforts in improving access to education for over 20 million schoolchildren and called on state governments to emulate the nation’s founding leaders by investing more in basic education.
Tinubu said education remains the surest ladder out of poverty and the strongest bridge to national dignity and prosperity.
