The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has expressed shock over a fire incident at LGEA Primary School, Ater, in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, which left seven pupils injured.
In a statement on Sunday, UBEC Executive Secretary Dr Aisha Garba conveyed sympathies to the affected pupils, their families, and the school community, describing the event as “tragic.”
She stated that the Commission was in contact with the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board and the state’s education ministry, whose officials had visited the school and the pupils receiving treatment at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Zaki-Biam.
Garba confirmed that the injured pupils were receiving complete medical care, with the bills cleared, while authorities assessed the extent of the damage to the school facilities. She praised the swift response of the Benue State Government, emergency services and caregivers, and pledged UBEC’s support to ensure classes resume in a safe environment.
Garba also urged school administrators nationwide to strengthen safety protocols while investigations into the cause of the fire continue. “Our prayers remain with the injured pupils for their full recovery,” she said.
