The University of Ibadan (UI) Security Unit has raised concerns over the growing trend of indecent dressing on campus, warning that it threatens the institution’s reputation.
Speaking anonymously, some of the security personnel said efforts to enforce the dress code have been undermined by students who question their authority and by the absence of clear directives from management.
“The situation is getting out of hand,” one officer said. “It is not just about the dress code, but about maintaining decency and respect on campus.” They welcomed a recent signpost on campus reminding students of the dress code, saying it has encouraged them to take a firmer stance. However, they urged management to provide more guidance and install additional signposts at key locations such as the school entrance and main gate.
The personnel also accused some lecturers of enabling the trend by entertaining students who appear inappropriately dressed in their classes. They called on the university to adopt stricter measures and issue clear enforcement guidelines to protect UI’s image as a centre of learning and discipline.
