The four internal unions at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina — ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT — have suspended their ongoing industrial action following successful negotiations with a committee set up by the Katsina State Government.
In a joint statement released on Thursday night, union leaders Murtala Abdullahi and Saminu Salisu announced that the suspension followed “constructive engagements” that addressed key strike triggers, including halting the takeover of the university portal by the third-party firm FlexiSaf Edusoft Limited, implementing appropriate salary structures, and resolving other policy concerns. The parties also signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which the unions described as “pivotal” to the decision.
The unions noted that one issue remains unresolved: payment of 34 months of arrears. Senator Ibrahim Ida, UMYU’s chancellor, personally intervened, appealing for the suspension and assuring members that steps would be taken to clear the arrears within a reasonable period.
The unions expressed gratitude to the state government, the chancellor, students, parents, and the wider university community for their support. They reaffirmed their commitment to campus stability and readiness to work with stakeholders to sustain industrial harmony.
The strike, which began on November 3, 2025, lasted two weeks and was triggered by delayed promotions, unpaid allowances, poor working conditions, and unresolved salary adjustment issues.
