The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof Tanko Ishaya, has called on university-based unions to set aside their differences and jointly press for the welfare of their members.
He appealed to the national executive of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) ahead of the union’s National Executive Council meeting hosted by the University of Jos.
Prof Ishaya, who also chairs the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, said universities exist to shape the country’s future by training the next generation of leaders. He described SSANU as a key stakeholder in the university system and noted that campus unions have played a vital role in strengthening Nigerian universities.
“There is only one mandate for management and unions – to build universities we can all be proud of,” he said, adding that Vice-Chancellors regularly explore ways of resolving disagreements with unions through dialogue.
SSANU’s National President, Mohammad Haruna Ibrahim, said the union had focused on advancing staff welfare despite the country’s challenges, particularly in education, health, agriculture, and security. He condemned recent student abductions in Niger and Kebbi states and urged governments to prioritise security and education.
The University of Jos branch chairman of SSANU, Anthony Joro, outlined the union’s achievements on campus and called for greater participation by senior members. The meeting also featured a plenary session and the presentation of awards to past university and union leaders.
