UNIBEN Students Face Confusion Over Hostel Assignments

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has sparked confusion after final-year students were assigned upper-bunk hostel spaces, contrary to the usual priority given to seniors for lower bunks.

The issue arose amid the university’s migration from the old KOFA portal to the new UNIBEN Student Portal.

Students noticed the irregular allocations while checking the new system, prompting backlash on social media. The Students’ Union clarified that the error resulted from data-transfer glitches during the portal migration, not from deliberate policy changes.

Comrade Ahonsi Godwin, Director of Information for the union, stated that university authorities have been contacted to correct the allocations and ensure final-year students receive appropriate lower bunks. He urged students to remain calm and rely only on official communication channels.

The union also noted that booking for special hostels would soon commence and reassured students that the upgraded portal, once fully operational, would streamline academic services and hostel management.

Students have expressed hope that the ICT unit would quickly resolve the errors to prevent overcrowding and disruptions to academic activities.
