UNICAL Transfers Dentistry Freshers to Other Departments

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has directed all Year One students admitted into the Faculty of Dentistry for the 2024/2025 academic session to transfer to other departments.

The decision, announced in a memo signed by Dr Bennyta B. Ikpeme, Deputy Registrar and Faculty Officer, on Monday, September 22, 2025, was issued in line with management’s directive to ensure a smooth transition for the affected students.

According to the notice referenced UC/CMS/FOD/DN/10, students must select from Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Physiotherapy, or Genetics and Biotechnology, and notify the Faculty Office by the close of work on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

The directive was copied to the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, the Registrar, and other senior officials, signalling the seriousness of the decision.

Reactions from students and parents have been mixed. While some consider the move a practical solution to institutional challenges, others expressed disappointment over the sudden redirection of academic paths.

Though management has not disclosed the reason for the restructuring, sources within the university linked it to possible accreditation or infrastructural issues within the Faculty of Dentistry.
