More than 200 students in the Department of Accounting at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) have reportedly recorded carryovers in a core mathematics course.
Some students described the outcome as unprecedented, stressing that failure in the course poses a significant setback, as it is compulsory to progress in the course.
They attributed the mass failure to difficult examination questions that went beyond the scope of classroom teaching. In contrast, others blamed inadequate lecture methods, alleging that classes were rushed and lacked depth.
Others, however, argued that poor study habits among some students contributed to the results, noting that many relied on last-minute preparations.
As of press time, COOU’s management had yet to issue an official statement. Students have also called on the university to review the circumstances surrounding the failure, strengthen teaching methodologies, and provide support mechanisms such as tutorials to prevent a recurrence.
