The University of Ilorin has dismissed claims that admission into the institution can be bought, insisting that places are awarded strictly on merit.
Admission Officer, Abdulkareem Sanni, told candidates on the university’s radio station that they do not need “connections” or to pay money to secure admission. He said selection will be based on a combination of O-level results, UTME scores and performance in the ongoing Post-UTME screening.
The warning comes as 21,971 candidates take part in the 2025/2026 screening exercise, up from 17,121 last year. The figure includes 20,220 UTME candidates and 1,751 Direct Entry applicants.
Director of the university’s CBT Centre, Prof Kamilu Rauf, attributed the surge to UNILORIN’s uninterrupted academic calendar. “When you come to UNILORIN, four years means four years,” he said.
Officials said the exercise, which began on August 28 and ends on September 4, has been smooth despite 26 underage candidates presenting themselves for the test. They cautioned parents against following their wards to the venues, stressing that biometric verification makes the process strictly candidate-centred. In the last session, the university admitted 12,856 students, underscoring the highly competitive nature of the admissions process.
