A doctoral student at Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Oluwadamilare Dauda, has won the Young Scientist Award from the National Veterinary School of Toulouse, France, for his research on blackfly transmission of onchocerciasis (river blindness) in southwestern Nigeria.
The French Embassy in Nigeria announced the award on its official social media handle, describing it as a prestigious honour given to promising researchers from low- and middle-income countries in the field of entomology — the scientific study of insects.
According to the embassy, the award enabled Mr Dauda to attend a summer course in Toulouse, where he interacted with international researchers and expanded his knowledge of disease vectors, especially those linked to neglected tropical diseases.
The embassy also praised his contribution to global public health and said it facilitated his visa process as part of efforts to strengthen academic exchange between France and Nigeria.
Reacting to the award, Mr Dauda thanked the French Embassy, his hosts in France, and Osun State University for their support.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, congratulated him, describing the achievement as evidence of the university’s growing global visibility and commitment to producing world-class researchers.
