The University of Uyo has secured a British Council grant to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria’s construction industry.
The one-year project, undertaken in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University, aims to enhance inclusivity, sustainability, and employment opportunities by integrating digital technologies into construction training.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Professor Emmanuel Akpabio, Director of International Programmes at the University of Uyo, described the initiative as a “milestone achievement” for the institution. He said the programme would equip participants with practical skills to meet the industry’s evolving demands, including Building Information Modelling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and sustainable practices.
“The construction industry is undergoing a paradigm shift. Professionals now require a multidisciplinary skill set that transcends traditional approaches,” Prof Akpabio said.
The project will include a “train the trainers” workshop in Uyo from October 14 to 17, alongside exchange visits to the UK involving academics and industry practitioners.
Akpabio noted that the grant would strengthen collaboration between academia and the construction sector while preparing students for real-world challenges. He commended the British Council for supporting the initiative and lauded the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo, for backing the project.
