The Vice-Chancellor of Summit University Offa, Prof. Abiodun Musa Aibinu, has called on Nigerian universities to play an active role in tackling the nation’s insecurity, emphasising that solutions go beyond military action.
Speaking during the university’s fifth and sixth combined convocation, Prof. Aibinu said institutions should combat misinformation, train technology-driven graduates, and equip students with skills addressing both tactical and non-tactical security challenges.
He highlighted a grant secured by the Mass Communication department to fight false narratives, describing misinformation as a major driver of panic.
“War is now technology-driven. Whoever controls coding, computing, and connectivity controls the world,” he noted, stressing the importance of drone and ICT training. Summit University partners with industries to build drones and electric vehicles as part of its contribution to national security and economic growth.
Prof. Aibinu also urged universities to introduce courses in financial literacy, renewable energy, AI, global citizenship, and Acadopreneurship to equip graduates with practical, nation-building skills.
The convocation celebrated 26 First Class graduates out of 319 students, with 164 earning Second Class Upper, 108 earning Second Class Lower, 25 earning Third Class, and 1 earning Pass.
The event also honoured Mrs Latifat Gbajabiamila and, posthumously, Alhaji T. A. Olatinwo for their contributions to education.
