The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has launched a ₦10 billion development fund to upgrade its facilities and enhance healthcare delivery across the South-South region as part of activities marking its 45th anniversary.
According to Prof Chijioke Nwauche, Co-chairman of the Organising Committee, the endowment aims to complete ongoing infrastructure projects, acquire modern medical equipment and strengthen human resource training. The initiative aligns with the anniversary theme, “Repositioning for Excellent Health Delivery.”
He noted that UPTH, which began in 1980 with just 200 beds, has grown into a 1,000-bed tertiary hospital offering advanced services, including IVF, cardiothoracic surgery, and molecular diagnostics. The hospital also runs five postgraduate training programmes and conducts cutting-edge medical research.
Chief Medical Director Prof Henry Ugboma said the endowment would sustain ongoing upgrades and complement government funding. He urged private and institutional partners to support the initiative, helping UPTH achieve world-class status in healthcare delivery, research, and training.
He added that a five-year strategic plan has been launched to drive innovation and improve service delivery across the hospital.
