The Vice Chancellor of Renaissance University, Ugbawka, Prof. Thaddeus Eze, has praised the federal government for sustaining the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) but called for an urgent review of student stipends.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by officials of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) for their zonal meeting hosted by the university, Eze noted that the allowance paid to students has remained unchanged for years despite rising inflation. He said the scheme has greatly benefited students by exposing them to practical work experience, but the stagnant payment makes it difficult for them to cope with current economic realities.
While commending government support, the Vice-Chancellor urged a “reasonable upward review” to ensure students can fully benefit from SIWES without financial hardship. He also highlighted Renaissance University’s strong partnership with ITF, which influenced the choice of the institution as host for the zonal meeting.
