Young Leaders Bridge Education Gap with Inclusive Digital Hub in Lagos School

Fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy have launched a groundbreaking project to promote inclusive digital learning in Lagos, unveiling the EmpowerAbility Hub at Ikeja Senior High School—one of the state’s inclusive secondary schools.

The initiative, led by the Academy’s Team Empower Group, is part of their capstone project and aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, which places a strong emphasis on technology-driven, equitable education for all. The hub is designed to ensure that students of all physical abilities have equal access to learning through modern digital tools and resources.

Speaking at the launch, Team Lead Teniola Hassan said the hub is more than a physical space. “It represents our commitment to building a digitally equipped, accessible learning environment where every student, regardless of physical ability, can thrive,” she said.

To complement the hub, the team also organised a two-day training for teachers on foundational strategies in inclusive education. Sessions introduced tools such as speech-to-text apps, hearing loops, and the concept of Deaf Architecture, which enhances classroom visibility for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

“On the second day, we explored AI-powered tools like captioning systems, interactive whiteboards, and adaptive platforms to address diverse learning needs,” Hassan explained. “We have installed interactive boards and projectors in every senior class and trained teachers on how to use them. With more support, we plan to expand this model.”

Executive Secretary of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, commended the fellows for their commitment to driving inclusion through innovation. She also announced the launch of the EmpowerAbility Young Leaders Club, which aims to nurture a new generation of empathetic student leaders who can champion inclusion in their communities. “We are proud that this initiative not only enhances digital learning but also empowers students to become change agents,” she said. The project drew the support of key stakeholders. Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr Muyiwa Gbedegesin, noted that “there is ability in every disability,” affirming the state’s commitment to leaving no one behind.

Mrs Omolade Shonubi, Director of Admin and Human Resources at the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), applauded the fellows for including LASODA in the project. “This is what the THEMES+ Agenda means in practice. We are proud to be part of a project that prioritises inclusion,” she said.

The EmpowerAbility Hub and Young Leaders Club contribute to Lagos State’s implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 4 on quality education and 10 on reducing inequality. The launch received commendations from education stakeholders and demonstrated the impact of public-private-academic collaboration in transforming learning environments across Lagos State.
