The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) has moved the Nigerian National Mathematical Sciences Olympiad from traditional pen-and-paper tests to an entirely computer-based format, marking a significant shift in the competition’s 17-year history.
Since its inception in 2006, the Olympiad has relied on analogue assessments, but NMC says digitisation will improve efficiency, accuracy, and the overall standard of the contest. “With advances in technology and wider internet access, it was necessary to adapt and provide students a seamless online experience,” said NMC Director and Chief Executive, Professor Promise Mebine.
This year, more than 8,000 students competed across eight subjects, including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Informatics. Participants were able to sit the examination from the comfort of their homes, a move NMC hopes will make the process more accessible while maintaining international standards.
Associate Professor Solomon Ojo, Head of the Olympiad, acknowledged minor technical glitches during the first round but said these would be addressed ahead of the next stage.
Professor Mebine emphasised that Nigeria’s participation in international mathematics competitions has enhanced the country’s global educational profile, urging students, schools, and parents to meet the challenge of increasingly competitive standards.
