The Botany Department at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has established a small computer lab to support students and lecturers in their learning and research endeavours. The lab was officially launched on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, within the department, which is part of the Faculty of Life Sciences.
Speaking at the event, Professor Maryam Aminu, the Dean of the Faculty, praised the Department of Botany for taking the lead in improving learning tools. She said the new computers would make it easier for lecturers to mark scripts and help students with their assignments, research, and projects. She encouraged other departments in the faculty to follow the same example. The Head of the Department, Professor Ramatu Aliyu, stated that the mini-computer lab is a significant achievement for the department. She explained that the lab was made possible through the generous support of some staff members.
According to her, Professor A. K. Adamu and Professor S. B. Bako each donated four computers, while the department bought four more. The internet connection for the lab was provided by Professor W. S. Japhet, who is the Centre Leader of the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) Centre of Excellence.
Moreover, Professor A. K. Adamu stated that he was pleased to support the department and emphasised that such contributions are crucial, particularly as artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a significant part of education. He urged everyone to do more to support students and staff and prayed for the Head of Department to continue bringing good ideas. Other senior professors in the department also gave goodwill messages during the event.
