Huawei Nigeria has begun upgrading the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) systems at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, starting with a comprehensive inspection of the school’s current setup.
This move comes after a recent meeting in Abuja between Huawei’s top officials and ABU’s management team. The aim is to modernise the university’s ICT system by introducing smart classrooms and better online learning tools. This was made known in a press release from the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, ABU Zaria, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
A Huawei team led by Mr. Mars Zhangmi, Director of the Enterprise Solutions Group, visited the university on the same day to inspect the ICT facilities and identify areas for improvement. During a visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, Mr Zhangmi said the inspection is a key part of Huawei’s plan to provide more local solutions and hire more Nigerian engineers. He added that many ABU graduates are already working with Huawei and doing well.
In his response, Professor Ahmed said the Abuja meeting with Huawei was his first official assignment as Vice-Chancellor. He explained that the university’s ICT system is outdated and needs urgent attention to support e-learning and the growing student population.
He added that his goal is to make ABU the leading ICT hub in Nigeria. He announced plans to introduce campus innovation competitions to prepare students for job opportunities at Huawei and other ICT companies. He also urged Huawei to assist in resolving technology challenges at the ABU Microfinance Bank.
Also speaking, Professor M.B. Mu’azu, Director of the IIOE Nigeria National Centre at ABU, stated that technology is crucial for the university to compete globally. Huawei’s Training Manager, Mr Kenneth Igwe, said he was happy with the partnership and looked forward to working with ABU to improve ICT services and support the school’s digital transformation.
