The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Prof Adamu Ahmed, has given the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) six months to prove its relevance or face decisive restructuring.
Speaking to staff and management in Zaria, Ahmed said NAPRI’s recent performance had fallen short of expectations in research output, innovation, and national relevance, describing the situation as “an institutional embarrassment and a national disservice.”
He declared a state of emergency at the institute, warning that visible results must be achieved within six months in key areas such as research, partnerships, staff productivity, and revenue generation.
“Time is running out. The nation is watching. The university is watching,” Ahmed stated, emphasising that NAPRI is “too important to fail.”
He said that with the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, the institute should be leading research and innovation in livestock production, but internal inefficiencies have hindered its impact.
To revive NAPRI, Ahmed inaugurated a seven-member reform committee chaired by Prof J.K.P. Kwaga to recommend urgent administrative and research reforms.
