Authorities in Akwa Ibom have closed several private schools found to be operating without approval, warning that unregulated facilities pose a risk to children’s safety.
The State Commissioner for Education, Ubong Essien Umoh, led inspections in Uyo and Nsit Ibom, where several schools were shut, including Gracious Steps Royal Academy, Toppers Academy, and Houston International Schools.
Officials said they uncovered overcrowded classrooms, schools built over septic tanks, and makeshift buildings converted into learning centres. Some institutions licensed only for nursery education were found to have expanded to primary and secondary levels without authorisation.
“This practice is deeply troubling,” Mr Umoh said, adding that proprietors must secure an official Authority to Operate before admitting pupils.
He urged parents to avoid unregistered schools and warned that the ministry will intensify enforcement across the state during the new academic year.
The crackdown, carried out with senior education officials and local government supervisors, is part of efforts to raise standards in the state’s schools and ensure children learn in safe, regulated environments.
