The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it will decide on its next move after its negotiation team briefs members this weekend on recent discussions with the Federal Government.
Olujimi Dada, ASUU chair at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, told reporters that union members have yet to receive details of the concluded talks. “Up till now, we have not been briefed. We do not know what has happened, and we do not know what we are going to do,” he said. Decisions on potential strikes will be based entirely on the team’s report.
Negotiations formally ended on Tuesday, with the union’s National Executive Council reviewing the final terms submitted by the renegotiation committee. ASUU’s one-month ultimatum to the government expired on Saturday, raising concerns over a possible nationwide shutdown of public universities.
The union has accused the government of slow action on longstanding demands, including revisiting the 2009 FG–ASUU agreement, payment of unpaid salaries and allowances, and release of revitalisation funds.
Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the government remains committed to avoiding further disruption. “The President has mandated us that he does not want ASUU to go on strike. We have met nearly all their requirements and have returned to the negotiation table. We will resolve this,” he said.
