Ekiti State University (EKSU) has begun renovation of its historic Government Hostel, known as the Great Taatan, following criticism over poor student accommodation.
The move comes weeks after a viral video exposed the dilapidated state of Omolayo Hostel, a privately owned facility outside campus. Many students and commentators initially blamed EKSU for the decay, sparking widespread debate about the university’s neglect of welfare facilities.
University officials and alumni have now clarified that Omolayo Hostel is not owned by EKSU. Instead, they said management had already started work on the Great Taatan Hostel, one of the institution’s most significant and most symbolic halls of residence.
The EKSU Alumni Association described the project as proof that management is responding to concerns about student welfare. Alumni and students welcomed the development, calling it long overdue and crucial to restoring confidence in the institution.
Observers say the renovation reflects EKSU’s broader effort to address infrastructure decay and reposition its image after years of criticism.
