China Scientists Develop Night-Vision Contact Lenses

A group of Chinese scientists has recorded a breakthrough in creating contact lenses that allow the human eye to see in the dark.

Developed by a research team led by Prof Tian Xue at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, the work is one of the first practical attempts to extend human vision beyond the visible spectrum.

The group published its findings in Cell in May 2025, describing how their lenses utilise nanoparticles composed of rare earth elements and gold to capture near-infrared light—wavelengths invisible to the naked eye —and convert it into visible light that the wearer can perceive.

Night vision has long been the preserve of bulky military goggles or specialised cameras, limiting its use in everyday life. By embedding the technology into a soft lens, the researchers aimed to develop a tool that would be lightweight, portable, and eventually accessible outside of laboratories and the armed forces.

With the lens, firefighters could navigate smoke-filled buildings, surgeons could perform delicate procedures without harsh lighting, drivers might see better at night, and in regions with poor infrastructure, simple lenses could illuminate entire communities after dark.

Early tests show that the lenses were able to detect flickering infrared signals invisible to the naked eye, and in some cases even perceived light through closed eyelids, since the tissue blocks visible light but allows infrared to pass through.

Although this breakthrough is still in its early stages, the innovation represents a significant step in the centuries-long quest to enhance human senses.
