The policy of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which allows only candidates aged 16 and above to gain admission into universities, has continued to stir reactions across the country.
The policy, which has received the backing of the Minister of State for Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, is meant to ensure students are mature enough to handle university life, both academically and socially.
However, critics argue that the policy is unfair to gifted children who complete secondary school before their 16th birthday. Parents and education stakeholders have insisted that the age limit could frustrate young talents instead of encouraging them.
While JAMB and other government officials have insisted that the policy protects young learners and adheres to international best practices, many Nigerians are questioning whether it truly benefits students, universities, or the nation’s education system.
