Professor Kashim Abolaji of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has called on the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to allocate more resources to the development of creative arts in Nigerian universities and colleges.
Speaking at the final-year art exhibition of the Creative Arts Department at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, the professor of Industrial Design stated that funding for the visual and applied arts remains inadequate, despite the growing relevance of the sector. He noted that while TETFund has mainly focused on infrastructure and teaching aids, institutions offering creative programmes struggle with access to essential equipment for practical training.
“The creative industry is growing, but many schools lack the tools to train students properly,” he said. Professor Abolaji, who served as an external examiner at the exhibition, described the works on display — ranging from sculpture to textiles and photography — as evidence of firm academic and practical grounding. He commended TASUED for creating space for students to express themselves through art and encouraged further inquiry studies to meet industry needs.
