A United Kingdom-based lecturer, Dr Obinna Otuu, has donated laptops and cash to teachers in Ebonyi State to promote quality education and teacher empowerment.
Otuu, a computer science PhD holder at Swansea University, donated during an event tagged “Ebonyi Teachers First” in Abakaliki. He stressed the need to prioritise teachers’ welfare, improve learning facilities, and enhance training opportunities across Nigeria’s education sector.
The scholar emphasised that investing in teachers was key to achieving standardisation in the nation’s education system. “Teachers need basic support to enhance their careers, including food, clothing and shelter,” he said.
Highlighting his commitment, Otuu presented ₦1 million to Mrs Alice Awaza, the oldest teacher at the event, who has served 32 years at Ohofia Community Primary School, Onicha LGA. Nine other teachers also received HP laptops to aid their classroom delivery.
Education experts, including Prof Daniel Nwibo and Prof Godwin Onu, commended the initiative, urging greater ICT adoption and improved welfare for teachers nationwide.
