Many public schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) continue to struggle with dilapidated classrooms, leaking roofs, and poor infrastructure, despite billions of naira reportedly being invested in the education sector.
In the Dnako community, Bwari Area Council, pupils of LEA Primary School are reportedly often sent home whenever it rains, as classrooms become flooded.
Parents say they have spent over N1 million in the last two years on roof repairs without success. “We are exhausted. People are taking their children to private schools,” said David Gyiwodeyi, chairman of the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA).
The situation is similar in Gyeyidna and Dokuma communities, where ceilings have collapsed, toilets are unusable, and pupils study on bare floors. There, teachers lament that heavy rains and winds worsen conditions, disrupting lessons and exposing pupils to health risks.
Meanwhile, FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) Chairman, Dr. Alhassan Sule, attests that more than 20 schools have recently lost their roofs to storms, but also disclosed that plans are underway to renovate 97 schools this year.
