Governor Ahmed Aliyu is set to place a monthly salary on Imams, muezzins, mosque leaders and prayer callers in Sokoto state, due to their roles as Islamic religious leaders.
This comes on the heels of over 66.4% of Sokoto’s 1.25 million school-age children out of the classroom, making it the second highest bearer of the problem, beside Kebbi State, according to recent statistics from the National Mass Education Programme Initiative (NMPI).
Aliyu made the salary decision public at the commissioning of a mosque renovated with state funds in the Kware Local Government Area on Friday. While the governor did not specifically mention the amount each religious leader would get under this programme, mosques on their own part would receive monthly allocations ranging from N300,000 to N500,000.
“The Governor explained that his administration has placed mosques on monthly cash allocations ranging from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000,” an article dated August 29, seen on the state’s website, stated.
