Heavy rains on Sunday caused massive flooding across Plateau, Bauchi, and Niger states, destroying over 90 houses, schools, churches, and farmlands, and displacing hundreds of residents.
In Plateau’s Menkaat community, Shendam LGA, more than 50 houses, two schools, and a church were destroyed by floods and violent winds. Trees were uprooted, rooftops blown off, and electric poles knocked down. Dass LGA in Bauchi State also saw over 40 homes lost and farmlands destroyed. Bauchi SEMA confirmed that many women and children now urgently need help.
In Niger State, farmlands were submerged in Kafin Koro, while 18 communities in Lapai LGA suffered damages. The state has advised residents in flood-prone areas to relocate. Experts blame poor drainage and climate change. Government officials in the affected states have warned of more flooding, citing recent deadly cases like the June disaster in Mokwa that killed over 200 people.
