Chairman of Zinox Group, Leo Stan Ekeh, has urged the Federal Government to subsidise electricity for Nigeria’s universities, polytechnics, and research centres to boost digital learning.
Speaking at the Nigeria Computer Society’s 19th International Conference in Kano, Ekeh warned that unreliable and expensive power supply is crippling innovation and limiting the competitiveness of Nigerian institutions. The industrialist explained that just about 5% of schools nationwide can afford electricity for six hours daily, making it difficult for students and lecturers to use digital tools effectively.
He stressed that many young Nigerians go for weeks without being able to recharge their devices, a situation that undermines learning and research. Mr Ekeh stressed that without reliable electricity, Nigeria cannot produce graduates ready to compete globally.
He also indicated that there was a need for the country to build a stronger local manufacturing, improve digital literacy, and private sector partnerships to fast-track Nigeria’s technological growth, insisting that power access is the foundation for true digital transformation.
