Miss Oluwaseun Oluwafunmilayo, a final-year student at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), who served as the university’s One-day Vice-Chancellor on May 19, 2025, has urged President Bola Tinubu to introduce a One-day President programme to involve Nigerian youths more closely in leadership. She believes this initiative will help young people feel more connected to the country’s governance.
Oluwafunmilayo, chosen for this role due to her excellent academic record and good conduct, was announced during a media briefing at FUOYE in Ado Ekiti.
She explained that the programme would allow youths to experience leadership firsthand and communicate their hopes directly to the nation’s top leader.
She also praised President Tinubu’s efforts to support indigent students in public universities through the Student Loan Fund, calling it a valuable programme that has helped many access quality education.
Addressing other challenges, Oluwafunmilayo mentioned the ongoing issues with unstable internet and mobile network services, which affect students’ academic and social activities.
She said the university is already in talks with MTN Telecommunications to find solutions to these problems.
On mental health, she pointed out that many students face emotional difficulties that are often ignored.
She revealed plans to partner the university’s Guidance and Counselling unit with the Health Centre to run mental health awareness campaigns.
These efforts will include outreach programmes, peer support groups, and easy access to professional counselling.
Oluwafunmilayo also added to the financial struggles many students endure. To ease this, she said FUOYE is preparing a proposal for a campus market where affordable goods will be sold at regulated prices.
This market will also help students start small businesses and create part-time jobs, reducing the need to rely on costly off-campus options.
This call for youth inclusion in leadership and the focus on student welfare comes at a time when Nigeria’s young population continues to seek more meaningful roles in national development.
