The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the branch of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has raised concerns over the reported allocation of the recently released ₦50 billion earned allowances by the Federal Government.
On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the union expressed dissatisfaction with claims that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set to receive 80% of the funds, leaving only 20% for other unions, including SSANU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
SSANU described the alleged distribution as unjust and called for a fair and equitable sharing of the allowances among all university-based unions. The union stated that all staff members are equal stakeholders in the university system and should be treated as such to maintain industrial harmony.
The Federal Government had announced the disbursement of ₦50 billion to settle outstanding earned allowances owed to academic and non-academic staff in federal universities, aiming to resolve long-standing labour disputes and prevent further disruptions in the nation’s higher education sector.
SSANU, along with NASU, has urged the government to release the funds directly to the universities for disbursement rather than to the unions to ensure transparency and fairness in the allocation process.
The union warned that any attempt to marginalise non-academic staff in the distribution of the earned allowances could threaten the existing peace and stability within the university system.
