Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has flagged off the construction of a National College that will help boost technical and vocational education and training across the state. The project is part of a broader overhaul of the education sector, which includes the revitalisation of technical colleges in Igarra, Irrua and Benin City.
The state Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, said the reforms align with the governor’s strategic roadmap to reposition education as the bedrock of long-term development in Edo.
Iyamu said the focus on technical education is intentional, adding “We are transforming dilapidated schools into modern learning centres equipped with science and technology laboratories, functional classrooms, sanitation facilities and instructional materials.”
He noted that the state has launched the EduRescue Initiative to reintegrate out-of-school children, providing them with free books and learning materials to ensure inclusivity and equal access to quality education.
Iyamu noted that teacher development remains a top priority, with the government investing in recruitment, continuous training and digital upskilling to equip educators for the increasingly evolving demands of the sector.
